Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun an extensive citywide campaign to repair pothole-prone roads and desilt stormwater drains in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. Officials said the drive will cover all administrative wards, prioritizing flood-prone areas such as low-lying suburbs and key arterial routes.
According to civic authorities, contractors have been instructed to complete major road resurfacing works before the onset of heavy rains. The BMC has also deployed additional machinery and workforce to accelerate silt removal from nullahs and underground drainage lines to prevent waterlogging.
Civic officials warned contractors of strict penalties for delays or substandard work, stating that quality checks will be conducted regularly. Residents can report potholes, garbage accumulation, or drainage issues through the BMC’s helpline and mobile application.
Meanwhile, the corporation has appealed to citizens to avoid dumping debris and plastic waste into drains, which significantly contributes to flooding during heavy rainfall. Environmental groups have welcomed the initiative but urged continuous monitoring rather than seasonal action.
The BMC aims to complete the majority of preventive works within the next few weeks to ensure smoother traffic movement and reduce monsoon-related disruptions across Mumbai.
